Building upon the society, institutions, and cultural foundations established during the Tudor Cymru Cycle, it traces the rise of industrial Wales and its impact on everyday life.

 

At the same time, it reconnects with themes explored throughout the earlier cycles, showing how the landscapes, resources, traditions, and identity of Cymru continued to shape the nation in a changing world.

The Industrial Revolution transformed Eryri into one of Britain's greatest slate-producing regions. Small local quarries expanded into vast industrial complexes such as Dinorwig, where thousands of quarrymen extracted and dressed slate using tramways, inclines and powerful machinery. Copper, lead and zinc mining also developed across the mountains, while new railways connected these remote industries to ports around the world. Growing villages such as Llanberis reflected this rapid industrial expansion, forever changing Eryri's landscape while supplying the slate that roofed towns and cities across Britain.

An Agricultural Industrial Revolution

11th July 2026

Unlike the coalfields of South Wales, the Tywi Valley's Industrial Revolution built upon its fertile farmland rather than heavy industry. Llandeilo developed into a busy market town where mills, tanneries and warehouses processed agricultural produce from across the valley. Railways, bridges and improved roads strengthened trade, while lime kilns and watermills supported increasingly productive farming. Only the upper valley became heavily industrialised through the Nantymwyn Lead Mine. As a result, the Tywi Valley retained its rural character, combining agricultural prosperity with limited industrial development.

The Welsh Mines Society is dedicated to researching and preserving the non-coal mining heritage of Wales. Its publications and online resources cover the country's rich history of copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold mining, together with the geology that made these industries possible.

Located within the former Dinorwig Quarry workshops at Llanberis, the National Slate Museum preserves one of the world's most important industrial heritage sites. Its collections explain how slate was quarried, processed and transported, while demonstrating the skills that made Welsh slate famous across the globe.

The museum combines preserved machinery with reconstructed workshops, historic buildings and demonstrations of traditional slate splitting.

Big Pit preserves one of Wales's historic coal mines and provides one of the world's most authentic introductions to underground mining. Guided by former miners, visitors descend into the original workings to experience the conditions in which generations of Welsh miners worked.

The National Wool Museum tells the story of one of Wales's oldest and most widespread industries. Unlike coal mining or slate quarrying, the woollen industry depended upon transforming a renewable agricultural resource into finished products. The National Wool Museum demonstrates that industrial Wales was far more diverse than its mines and quarries alone. Understanding the results

Many industrial landscapes only make sense when viewed alongside their transport networks.

​
